What do Counselors do?

  • The Big Sky High School Counseling Department uses the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model to design our program. We are making changes every year to improve our program.

By following the ASCA model, our program attempts the following:

    1. We serve ALL students. Through preventative design, we seek students out rather than just waiting for them to come to us.
    2. We use data to identify areas of need and select interventions, and to monitor the effectiveness of programs.
    3. We implement interventions in collaboration with students, parents, other school staff, and community resources.

School Counselors deliver a comprehensive program through four different services:

    1. Classroom Guidance Lessons
    2. Small Groups
    3. Individual Student Planning
    4. Responsive Services.

"Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. Or download the parent resource, Who Are School Counselors? See the list of appropriate and inappropriate duties for school counselors".
