BSHS English Department Plagiarism and AI Policy
What is Academic Honesty? An authentic piece of work is one that is based on the candidate’s individual and original ideas with the ideas and work of others fully acknowledged. Therefore, all assignments, written or oral, completed by a candidate for assessment must wholly and authentically use that candidate’s own language and expression. Where sources are used or referred to, whether in the form of direct quotation or paraphrase, such sources must be fully and appropriately acknowledged. Taken from the Flathead High School Academic Policy Academic honesty: guidance for schools. 2003. Geneve. IBO.
Students are responsible for:
Complying with the Big Sky High School Academic Honesty Policy.
Seeking clarity from teachers during the assignment process and regarding any aspect of Academic Honesty guidelines.
Taking ultimate responsibility for ensuring that all work submitted for assessment is authentic, with the work or ideas of others fully acknowledged.
Language from Flathead High School Academic Honesty Policy, which was adapted from the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries Academic Honesty Policy 2007
Classroom Procedures:
-
Teachers may provide students with an authenticity statement to sign and turn in with their assessments.
-
Teachers may at any time ask to see students’ evidence of progress, research, etc and use that information to assess the student’s work.
-
Teachers will explicitly educate students about academic honesty and plagiarism.
Interventions and Consequences:
Offense #1: Conference with teacher to determine the level of plagiarism. Student should be able to show their work, thinking, rough drafts etc. to prove if they did or did not plagiarize. Teacher has discretion to complete a report only ODR, and/or inform parents or other stakeholders. Grade is suspended pending the outcome of the conference. The ability to resubmit is at the teacher’s discretion.
Offense #2: A wrap-around conference is scheduled with the student, parents, teacher, administrator, and counselor. Any coaches or advisors of extracurricular activities will also be notified. Teacher contacts the student’s other teachers to see if this is a problem across classes and if so invites them to the conference. An ODR will be submitted to Administration. Students will receive a zero for the assignment; this may be changed pending the outcome of the conference and resubmissions for underclassmen (9-10) at the discretion of the teacher. For upperclassmen (11-12) the zero will stand.
Offense #3: Students will receive a zero for the assignment. An ODR will be submitted to the Administration. There will be no opportunity for resubmission. Parents, administrators, coaches and/or advisors will be notified.
AI Statement
While we will not ban the use of AI software, we recognize that over-use of this technology can be harmful to your cognitive development and prevent you from learning the things you need to know to be a human being.
Therefore, your teacher reserves the right to intervene if you are over-reliant on AI to complete your coursework at the cost of meeting learning objectives. Below are some guiding principles to follow when considering using AI:
-
AI is not a replacement for original thought. Begin any analysis or prompt by considering your own reactions and initial ideas.
-
Keep in mind that you need to be able to understand and explain any words, phrases, or ideas contained in work that you turn in.
-
Any use of AI must be cited just as any other text would be, and should be only a small portion of your work.
