Snacks and water bottle

Students are allowed to bring snacks to my class.  Snacks should be healthy and something that is easy to access and not a distraction to others. If your child would like to bring a water bottle, they can.  Keep in mind that soda pop, energy drinks, and coffee are not allowed.

Homework:

Homework is generally not assigned.  Students will have time in class to complete assignments.  Homework may become necessary if student is absent or were unable to complete the assignment  in class.

English Language Arts:

Daily journals will be required every day.  This is a participation grade but enhances and introduces the lesson of the day.

Our district adopted the Engage New York Curriculum which focuses on novels.  We will be studying the following novels:  Percy Jackson: Lightning Thief, Bud, Not Buddy, Sweetgrass Basket, and Frightful's Mountain.

Through these units, students will learn inferencing, vocabulary, citing text evidence, and forming arguments.  This is our fourth year using the curriculum.  Please contact me with any questions you may have.

Novels

A novel may be checked out to your student.  It is due back at the end of the unit.  A replacement cost of $16.00 will be in place if the book is lost or damaged.  I am not assigning late fees but ask that it is returned quickly so that it isn't lost and forgotten.

Social Studies:

Social Studies Journals will be required every day.  This is a participation grade but enhances and introduces the lesson of the day.

Our Social Studies will focus on the following ancient units/civilizations:  Early Man and Human Migration to the Americas, Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India, Greece and Rome.  We will explore these topics with group projects, individual efforts, Socratic Seminars, and hands-on projects.

I look forward to a wonderful year!!!
