Schedule

Students are attending periods 1 and 6 currently.  We let students in the building at 7:45 in the morning.  They can get a, “grab and go” breakfast which they eat in their 1st period class.  Class begins around 8:00 and continues, with breaks, until 10:30 when they have lunch.  They eat lunch in the same classroom and then switch to 6th period at 10:50.

Google Classroom on Remote Learning Days

All of my classes use Google Classroom.  Here we post material and assignments for remote learning.  They can email teachers from here or post class comments or private messages to the teachers for help.

What is Remote learning?

Remote learning occurs on the days students are not attending school.  Tuesday and Wednesday or Thursday and Friday.  Students should log into Google Classroom, complete the homework assignments, and or read their novel for English.

Office hours

Every Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm to 2:30 I am hosting office hours for students to ask questions.  To access from Google Drive:  Go to Google Apps, a.k.a. “The waffle”, click on Google Meet, and type “cspmartin.”

Snacks and water bottle

Students are allowed to bring snacks to my class.  Snacks should be healthy and something that is easy to access and not a distraction to others. If your child would like to bring a water bottle they can. Currently our water fountains are closed but there are places to fill a water bottle.  Keep in mind that soda pop, energy drinks, and coffees are not allowed.

English Language Arts:

Daily journals continue everyday as part of the student's participation grade.

Our district adopted the Engage New York curriculum which focuses on novels.  We will be studying the following novels:  Percy Jackson: Lightning Thief, Bud, Not Buddy, and Frightful's Mountain.

Through thsi students will learn inferencing, vocabulary, citing text evidence, and forming arguments.  This is our third year using the curriculum.  Please contact me with any questions you may have regarding any questions you may have.

Novels

A Percy Jackson:  The Lightning Thief book has been checked out to your student.  It is due back at the end of the first rotation, or (September 17th)  A replacement cost of $16.00 will be in place if the book is lost or damaged.  I am not assigning late fees but ask that it is returned quickly so that I can check it out to the next class.

Social Studies:

Social Studies Journals will be required everyday that we have class.  This is a participation grade but generally enhance or are part of our regular assignments.

Our Social Studies will focus on the following ancient civilizations:  Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India, Greece and Rome.  We will explore these civilizations with group projects, individual efforts, Socratic Seminars, and hands on projects.

I am excited for a wonderful year!
