Sentinel High School and Band - Bio
Nestled in a beautiful valley, Sentinel High School lies beside a picturesque mountain landscape in Missoula, Montana. Missoula has a vibrant arts community that is supportive of arts education from the public-school level to collegiate level. Missoula is also home to the University of Montana.
Thanks to the support of the administration and parent organization, the Sentinel band program has grown from under 70 students in 2016 to the current 200+ members. The Sentinel band boosters have taken a strong leadership role by funding a handful of professional coaches who work with students on a weekly or bi-weekly rotation. These coaches give weekly sectionals to each ensemble and have been an incredible addition to Sentinel’s band program success. We have also been lucky to attract multiple University of Montana music education and performance students who observe class, run sectionals, and volunteer as part of their degrees.
Sentinel’s band program currently has three concert bands, a percussion ensemble, two jazz bands, a 200+ piece marching band, and a very active/rowdy pep band. The concert band and advanced band are open to students of all ability and experience levels. Experienced players who are looking for a more ambitious class may audition for the Wind Ensemble. All of Sentinel’s band ensembles consistently receive Superior or Gold ratings at local festivals, as well as at out-of-state festivals. In 2016, the Sentinel Wind Ensemble earned a gold rating at the Anaheim Heritage Festival, a gold rating at the 2019 “Sounds of Spring Festival” in New York City at Carnegie Hall, and first place at the 2022 Anaheim Heritage Festival.
