MCPS Instrument Rentals

MCPS maintains a limited selection of instruments for rental to students in grades 5–8 enrolled in a corresponding music class. The district rents out the following instruments to students (subject to availability):
- Violin
- Viola
- Cello
- Bass
- Flute
- Oboe
- Clarinet
- Bass Clarinet
- Alto Saxophone
- Tenor Saxophone
- Bassoon
- Trumpet
- Trombone
- Horn in F/French Horn
- Baritone
- Tuba
- Drum Kits (for 5th grade percussionists)
Other instruments may be rented out in coordination with a student's music teacher.

How much do MCPS instrument rentals cost?
Instrument rentals are:
- $75 for the school year
- $30 for the summer

How do I pay for an instrument rental?
Payments can be made with cash, check, or card. Checks should be made out to MCPS Arts Education. Card payments can be made in person or over the phone: 406-542-4030. The office's address is:

Missoula, MT 59801Building B's public entrance faces south, towards the Sentinel HS athletic fields. The MCPS Arts Education office is the first door on the left upon entering.

When can my 5th grader get an instrument?
There are two rental dates for 5th graders:
- If the student is registered for the Beginning Band & Orchestra Camp, instrument rentals will occur just before camp. Rentals will be available on August 14 and 15, 2025 for these students only.
- 5th grade instrument rental night is Sept. 10, 2025 from 4 - 7 p.m.

My child's instrument is broken/malfunctioning. What should I do?
Please inform the MCPS Arts Education office as soon as possible. We will try our best to provide a temporary replacement instrument while repairs occur.

How does my child return their instrument?
Your child will return their instrument near the end of the school year on a day specified and communicated by their music teacher. If your child misses the return day, the instrument should be returned ASAP to the MCPS Arts Education office:

My child wants to rent for the summer or use the instrument for camp. Should we keep it instead of turning it in?
All instruments should be turned in near the end of the school year. This allows instruments to be inspected, cleaned, and/or repaired. Students participating in camp or renting over the summer will receive their instruments back ASAP.
