Parent Organizations

  • Parents are the strongest source of volunteers in MCPS, from PTA/PTOs to booster clubs. Volunteer work with these organizations does not necessarily fall under the requirements of other MCPS volunter positions.

PTA/PTO and booster club leadership should use these guidelines for registering and screening volunteers:

    • If a volunteer only works with a parent organization and does not have contact with students, they do not need to register as an MCPS volunteer.
    • If a volunteer will have contact with students as a member of parent organization, they do need to register as an MCPS volunteer.
    • If a volunteer is a member of a parent organization and also volunteers in a classroom, they do need to register as a volunteer. The same standards apply as any other MCPS volunteer position.
    • If a volunteer is an extended family member who somtimes helps with parent organization events, the same standards as above apply. If the volunteer will have contact with students, they do need to register as an MCPS volunteer.

The District administration understands that sometimes volunteers arrive at the last minute to help with large events. We ask parent organization leadership and school administrators to keep student safety in mind when assigning last-minute volunteers to duties.
