    We can't quite believe that this school year is coming to a close. While it has been full of changes and challenges, it has also been full of growth and discovery. Thank you for supporting us through it all. We are so grateful for your sweet kiddos and this wonderful community of families!
    Here's the latest:
    • We have been writing some amazing poetry! Be sure to find time to sit down together when they come home and have your child read them to you, I am guessing you will shed some quiet tears when you hear them!  βœ
    • We are working on animal research reports. Next week, we will finish up our project.  πŸͺ
    • We worked on the prefixes: non, mis, mid, and micro. 
    • We worked on estimating measurements. πŸ“
    • We read more about biographies.  πŸ‘©

    Here's the latest from our classroom: 
    • On Mystery Science Monday, we asked the question: Where do plants grow best? We explored many different plant species and the unique needs of those plants. We then played a "plant survivor" game to identify the perfect habitat for our plants. 
    • We read the fascinating biography of Eleanor Roosevelt this week. We used details from the text to help us better understand the author's purpose. Next week, we will read a biography on Alfred Nobel.
    • This week, we wrote persona poems and color poems. We also learned about Iambic Pentameter.
    • We continued our measurement unit this week and we brushed up on our 3-digit subtraction and addition skills.
    • We learned how the suffixes ible, able, less, and ness change the meaning of root words.

    • Our last homework page of the year was sent home this week. 
    •  Just a reminder to return all library books πŸ“— as soon as possible. Thank you!
    • Wednesday, June 9th is the last day of school. Students will be dismissed at 11:30 that day.

    Here's the latest from our classroom:
    • We compared a non-fiction text about taking care of the earth πŸŒŽ to a fictional piece about the same subject.
    • We described a character's response to change in our new book called Meadowview Street.
    • We started our  πŸ“ measurement unit last week. We're learning to compare units of measurement, compare object lengths, and measure large and small objects.
    • We are working on the "tion, ture, and ion" spelling patterns.
    • We have started Theatre with Ms. Darci.

    What great spring weather we are enjoying! πŸŒ±
    Here's the latest from our classroom:
    • We created birdhouse prototypes and seed dispersal models in our latest Mystery Science explorations. .
    • We have been writing lovely poems and learning all about poetic tools such as alliteration, metaphor, onomatopoeia, and more. Ask your child all about their poetry.
    • We have been working with inflectional endings and vowel teams.
    • We just finished our latest non-fiction book club book called 68 Ways to Save the Planet Before Bedtime. Ask your child about the text features in this fun book and have them share some simple tips with you at home. 
    • We have been learning to add multiple 2 and 3 digit numbers.

     πŸŒŽ What a great experience of learning and discovery in 2S!
    Here's the latest from our classroom:
    • We are studying 3 and 4 digit subtraction. We're using our place value knowledge to solve our equations.
    • Miss Dacia, our Native American specialist, read us a narrative written by a Sioux child during Western expansion.
    • We kicked off our poetry unit by writing Earth Day Haiku poems.
    • Did you know that some mosquitos can be pollinators? Did you know that there are over 4,500 species of bees? This week we took a virtual field trip to the Missoula Insectarium and we dove deep into the amazing world of pollination. Ask your child to tell you the 3 clues that help you determine whether or not an animal is a pollinator. Thank you to the PTA for funding this virtual field trip for us! 
    • In celebration of Earth Day, we took a sensory walk and recorded entries in our nature journals.

    Here is the latest from our classroom: 
    • Our latest text called Pioneers of the West is teaching us all about westward expansion in the United States. We're learning to describe the connections between historical events and we're learning to use text features to help us to find information.
    • We are reviewing and strengthening our opinion writing skills
    • We wrapped up our study of 3-digit number comparisons and we're diving into skip counting with larger numbers. 
    • We learned about cows with our (virtual) Farmer in the Classroom this week.  Ask your child how many stomachs a cow has and the ratio of cows to humans in our great state of Montana!
    • We completed a Mystery Science challenge on animal classification this week. Ask your child what they learned.
    • We are working on the prefixes: pre, dis, re 
    🐝We need to have all of our colored pencils restocked, please send in a new pack as soon as possible, and if you might be able to send in a couple extra, that would be much appreciated!  
    Also, please be sure your kiddo has a water bottle each day!

    Here is the latest from our classroom:
    • We are working on place value with larger numbers.
    • We worked with the "ew, oo, ui, and ue" vowel patterns this week.
    • We are working hard in taking pride in our work, from neatness to quality. 
    • We are working on making predictions, and asking and answering questions as we read.
    If you have extra disinfectant wipes you can send, we are always grateful! 
    • We have school on Monday, March 29th! We look forward to seeing your 2nd grade 5 days starting next week. :)
    • Picture day is on April 6th.

    • We've been learning about the planet Mars and Perseverance's fascinating mission to Mars.
    • We are learning to tell time to the hour, half hour, and minute. Any home practice with this skill would be greatly appreciated.
    • This week, we are focused on the "ou, ow, oi, oy" word patterns.
    Conferences Next Week: 
    • I look forward to meeting with you next Tuesday, March 9th over Zoom. I will resend the Zoom link and schedule very soon.

    Hi 2nd Grade Families,❄ 
    Here's the latest from our classroom:
    • πŸ“We wrapped up 2-digit addition and subtraction and we're moving on to money this week.
    • 🎨In art class, we studied artist Paul Klee and created imitation paintings of castles. We also studied artist Jonas Wood and created imitation collages.  Both pieces are gorgeous. Our beautiful paper mache hearts will be coming home soon.
    • ✏We continue to write narratives. This week, we're working on adding rich descriptions to our pieces.
    • 🎡 We started music with Mrs. Gibson this week. We're working in small groups to create a rainforest reader's theater project. 
    • πŸ“™ In ELA, we are wrapping up our book Earth Dragon Awakes. Next week, we will read 2 comparison pieces (fiction and nonfiction) about Johnny Appleseed. 
    Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on Tuesday. March 9th. We will send out the conference schedule on February 25th. We look forward to meeting with you very soon!

    Greetings, 2nd Grade Families, πŸ˜Š
    It has been so great having your kiddos here 4 days a week! We are really digging in and becoming a strong community of learners!
    Here's the latest from our classroom:
    • We have been enjoying Art with Mrs. Thompson. We just finished a painting project and now we're moving on to paper mache.
    • We have been studying 2 digit subtraction strategies with ungrouping. We are now moving  on to using larger numbers and applying our strategies to more complex word problems. 
    • We have been studying ecosystems and habitats with Mrs. Thompson in small groups. We will wrap up our learning with an art project. We love integrating art and science!
    • We started our new novel study. It's called The Earth Dragon Awakes. It's the story of two families who survived the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. This week, we focused on describing how characters respond to a change or event.  πŸ“™
    • We are focusing on reading and spelling long vowel patterns.
    • We are learning to ask and answer questions as we read.
    • We are writing narratives complete with characters, setting, a problem and a solution as well as rich description and excitement. 
    πŸ’“Valentine's Day: Due to Covid restrictions, we ask that you do not send Valentine's to school this year. Instead, we will be making special Valentine's for our classmates at school. We will have a food-free celebration and exchange on Friday, February 12th. Thank you so much for your understanding.
