Touching Base
Posted by Ashley Schuman on 3/24/2020 10:00:00 AMGood Morning,
I know we are all in an interesting spot right now. I miss all of your children SO much and wish we were all together again! Right now, many of us have questions and please know that we are working so hard to answer them and figure things out for us all.
Yesterday afternoon was our first meeting as a staff. We met virtually via google chat and made goals and expectations to start on. We do not have a solid plan for what the rest of the school year will look like yet - or when we will be returning to school. What we do know is that we are going to be doing distance learning that will include both online components and we also plan on sending home packets and activities at some point. Right now, I ask a few things of you:
- If you are receiving these emails as well as other information from the district will you please respond to me immediately and let me know. If you are not receiving information from the district level (Dr. Watson) please contact the school to change your preferences.
- We want to ensure that all students have access to a device and internet at home. If you are in need of a computer, Russell has many still available for you to check out and use at home during this time. In your email to me if you could let me know whether you have a device and internet or not that would be helpful!
- The third grade team plans on using Google Classroom to send out information and activities to students. All students already have a google account set up and used at school. If you could please have your child log on to their google account at home. Their email address is going to be 29_ _ _ _ _ _@student.mcpsmt.org. The blank spaces will be the first three letters of their last name, followed by the first three letters of their first name. For example if the students name was John Smith the email would be 29smijoh@student.mcpsmt.org. Every student should know their password because they use it to log on to the school’s computers on a daily basis. It will be their name with a capital letter, a few numbers after their name, and ends with and exclamation mark.
Once your child is logged onto their account, have them click the 9 little dots at the top right of the screen. Then they need to find google classroom and select that. I have added all students to my classroom and I need them to join so that they will be able to see future things I post! I have already posted one assignment (to write a paragraph about their spring break) for them to start working on.
As a reminder from Dr. Watson and the district, students are not expected or required to be completing anything specific at home this week. The district has put together many online resources and a sample schedule for you to follow at home if it is helpful. Students may also be working on any websites that we do at school. Here is the link to the district outline:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DMel5zNTa_WSBkcLvL4T1FwH1dWNgFohAOKbHTx3KNI/edit
By the end of this week, you will be getting more information from me including a video and a loose schedule that might be helpful for you to follow at home with my instruction. Please note that students will be asked to start completing assignments online.
I hope that this answered some of your questions and if you have more please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am here to help in any way that I can!

Continue checking your email and look for updates and information from myself and the district. Please give your students a squeeze for me and let them know how much I am missing them. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Conferences for 3rd graders will be held the same way they did in the Fall as an open house style. Mrs. Masters, Mr. G. and myself are SO lucky to have the opportunity to teach all 3rd graders and we love being able to touch base with all of you!
Click this link to pick a day to come visit with us about your child's progress! Can't wait to celebrate all the great growth!

YMCA Swim Lessons
Posted by Ashley Schuman on 1/28/2020 3:00:00 PMThe Third Graders are so lucky because we get to take swimming lessons from the YMCA. Swim lessons start Friday, February 7th and will continue to be every Friday throughout February.
PLEASE return your swim information ASAP. The swim director is trying to make groups based on swim experience. The cost is $18, but scholarships are available. If you need one, just return your paperwork and I will do the rest.
This is such a FUN opportunity for the kids!

Math Practice
Posted by Ashley Schuman on 1/14/2020 8:00:00 AMIt is so important that your child knows their multiplication and division facts up to 10. Our goal is for them to see a multiplication/division problem and say the answer within three seconds.
If you need flashcards to help with the practice, please let me know and I will send some home with your child.

Happy New Year
Posted by Ashley Schuman on 1/6/2020 8:00:00 AMWelcome back and Happy New Year! Hope you had a wonderful, restful break. We are getting ready to start the middle of the year STAR reading and math assessment. Please help your child get back into the swing of things by getting to bed at a decent hour, practicing their multiplication/division facts and count-bys, and reading every night!
