Happy Monday! We generally have a SPARK artist come into school to work with our students every year. This year we are lucky to have Sneed Collard III. Instead of Sneed coming into our actual classroom, he will be working with us through Google Classroom. We have included a video for you to get a little more information about the changes for this weeks assignments and this  project.https://youtu.be/AD609z86UBk

  • Shoutout to all the parents and guardians

Posted by Sandra Whatman on 4/16/2020 9:00:00 AM

Shoutout to all the parents and guardians who have become teachers this past month. You have taken on a new role that I am sure you weren't planning on taking. I wanted to take a moment to thank each and everyone of you who have joined me on this adventure. It has been stressful, frustrating and maybe you have even experienced some tears. I have! Being a mom of two myself and then teaching 25 students, who I miss terribly, has made me reflect a lot over the past month.

We were all thrown into this adventure with no preparation. Some of us were asked to use technology and platforms we didn't know existed. Keeping track of your own work schedules, daily assignments from teachers, Google meets (or Zoom) depending on your child's teacher has been overwhelming to say the least.

After all that is said and done, you are all amazing. I keep reminding myself that there will be a day when we look back on the spring of 2020 and say we got through and did just fine. Not sure that any of us will want to go through something similar anytime soon. However, I am thankful for the extra time with my family, the trial of a new way of teaching (not preferred) and the extra random acts of kindness I was able to do during this time.

Take a moment to reflect on what you are thankful for because all of you are doing a great job. If you haven't taken a moment to play a game with your kids, go ahead that is ok today. If you haven't gone for a walk outside with your kids, go ahead that is important too. If you haven't taken a moment to just breathe, go ahead this is welcomed.

This will pass and your kids will remeber the little things you did together, not the work that got done on time! Thank you for your continued support at home. Stay well and be safe!

  • Weekly Updates

Posted by Sandra Whatman on 4/12/2020 7:00:00 AM

    (week of April 13-17)

A few changes for next week, I will have virtual office hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-10am. These are designed for you or your child to log in and ask me questions about the assignments. We will have Google Meets on Monday from 11:00-11:30 and Thursday from 1:00-1:30pm. These are for students to check in with me and their classmates. There will no longer be a code to use for the Google Meets. Students will go to Google Meets, click join a meeting and type 4Whatman to log in. This will take them directly to our meetings safely.

All students are encouraged to keep doing school work while we are doing remote learning. At this point we are not sure when or if we will be returning to school this school year. In order for students to continue their learning we all need to be working on the learning standards. Please find what works for your family and please let me know how I might be able to help. We are all in this together.

Thank you for all of your support during this time.

  • Happy Thursday!

Posted by Sandra Whatman on 4/2/2020 4:00:00 PM

I hope that this message finds you safe and well. We are slowly adapting to the new online school environment. A few things that I wanted to point out that might be helpful.

First - When accessing Google Classroom, there are several choices at the top of the screen for how to view the information. Always click on the "Classwork" choice to see your classroom information in the most organized format. You should notice that it is organized by date.

Second - Encourage your students to click "Turn In" or "Mark as Done" or "Answer Question" or "Submit" whenever they see that option on an assignment and are finished with it. It helps me to know when something requires my attention.

Third - In my Google Classroom, I am going to have a category called "Mrs. Whatman's Schedule." This is where I will post when our Google Meets are.

Finally - Please do not stress about school! Try to create a schedule that works for you and your family, but be flexible and do what is best for you and your family. Please reach out if I can be of any help. Nothing is set in stone and I am happy to make accommodations as needed!

Hope you are all staying safe and healthy at home!

  • Great Stuff!

Posted by Sandra Whatman on 3/31/2020 9:00:00 PM

Congratulations Parents, Guardians, Siblings, Students, Neighbors and anyone who is helping with the remote learning.

In the first two days, I have seen a great turnout of students who are logging in each day to complete their assignments. As a reminder, please make sure the assignments are being turned in. To do this, there is button on the right hand side of the screen that the students need to click when they finish their assignments. At this point a few students have not done this, but I am still able to see that their assignments are done. I sent them a private message reminding them to click that button too.

I am planning on doing a Google Meet twice a week to check in with the students. This is not required but is a time for the students to log in and ask questions about assignments and to just see one another. Sometimes we might play some different games to have fun while "learning".

At any time, if you have questions please feel free to reach out by email scwhatman@mcps.k12.mt.us. I am constantly checking my email. You can also send a message through google classroom if your student has a question about an assignment.

Thanks again for your continued support at home.

  • Going into the weekend

Posted by Sandra Whatman on 3/27/2020 9:00:00 PM

Today was our first Google Meet and 16 of our 25 students joined in our discussion. It was so good to see these students smiling and asking each other questions. They truly were happy to see one another.

My plan is to have a class meeting at least once a week to check in with the students. This way I can answer any questions they may have and just to be able to connect with one another. If there is a time that the student would like to connect with me one-on-one they have been told to email me and we can make arrangements.

MondayMarch 30, begins our online learning. Everything that the students will need to know at this point is they will access Google Classroom to find their assignments. There will be 3 assignments for them to complete. One for Math, ELA and Writing. These assignments can be completed in any order and any time during the day.

If there are questions please email me and we will work together to get through this new adventure. We have to be bad at something before we can be good. Expect there to be questions and maybe some tears. All of that is to be expected.

    Things to remember:

*I will use my blog to post updates

*I will send mass notifiations text/email for reminders and updates

*All assignments can be found on Google Classroom

    *Email me with any questions.

As Russell Bears, we will get through this together.

  • Google Meet Friday

Posted by Sandra Whatman on 3/25/2020 7:00:00 PM

I am planning on having a Google Meet this Friday from 1-2pm. Students will log into their google accounts an go to google meet to join. I sent an invite to them so they have the code. If there are problems, let me know and we will work those kinks out. We will use google meets during the next several weeks.

Remember, we are on this adventure together. Are we having fun yet?
