This has been our best week of learning this year!  The A group and B group have combined into a cohesive, hard-working class and I am excited about the fantastic collaboration and cooperation that is happening already.

We have been reading biographies and working on main idea, as well as asking and answering questions about a text.

In math, we have started doing double-digit subtraction with regrouping (borrowing).  Right now, we are using manipulatives to demonstrate the concept.  Next week, we will move away from the manipulatives.  We have also done some fraction practice, which the kids are rocking!

Since everyone is at school four days a week now, we have had time to integrate some science into our reading and writing curriculum.  So, the kids are slowly becoming experts on our changing Earth!

We take the Star Test three times per year-- fall, winter, and spring-- to monitor students' progress.  This week, we took both the math and reading tests, and the kids showed good growth!  They have been working hard at home and at school.

We have also been working on double digit addition, asking and answering questions with text evidence, authors' purpose, stretching sentences with details, and much more!

I am excited to get all 2 O kids under the same roof at the same time!  January 26th will be a fun day!!!!!

We had a fantastic monster themed week!  The kids completed monster challenges that required making inferences, deductive reasoning, and problem solving.  They displayed excelllent critical thinking skills and teamwork!  This is a really great group of kids, and I love seeing them work together and progress academically.

Reading at home for fun is soooooo important.  Kids that read a lot at home tend to be way more successful in school than kids who don't.  I hope that everyone is able to get tons of library books to keep their kiddos engaged and adventuring in reading.

We have been working on folktale and fable puppet shows that address important second grade standards like:

recounting stories, including fables and folktales, and telling their message, moral, or lesson

    and

noticing characters' different points of view and speaking in a different voice for each character to show this.

We are going to post these fantastic shows on You Tube the week after next.

When we learn about folktales and fables in second grade, we usually invite families and friends to watch puppet shows.  Since we are not allowed to have visitors this year, we are going to film our puppet shows and put them on Youtube.  I will be sending home a permission slip next week.

Please turn in the technology agreement forms if you haven't yet.

THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP WITH YOUR CHILD'S HOME LEARNING!

I am amazed by and grateful for this hard-working group of kids!  Because of the small group sizes and the super motivated kids, we are able to accomplish so much in the two short days that we spend together.

I am excited about how well the kids are doing with Seesaw on their remote days.  Thanks, parents, for your help on this!

Next week is a short week because of teacher professional development.  Monday will be a remote learning day for all students.  A day kids will learn in person on Tuesday and remotely on Wednesday.  B day kids will learn remotely Monday and Tuesday and in person on Wednesday.

Next week, our special class switches from P.E. to Art, so clear some wall space for the masterpieces that I am sure will be coming home over the next few weeks!

This is extremely important:  Next week, any child that does not have technology agreements on file will not be allowed to use computers at school for any reason.  Let me know if you have questions or need help with this!

We had another great week in second grade!  If you did not fill out the Acceptable Use Technology forms online, I put paper copies in your child's mailbox, so please look for them in the take-home folder.  Any student who doesn't have the completed the forms on file by October 14th will not be allowed to access Clever anymore.  Let me know if you have questions about any of the forms.

As we transition to online jobs for home learning days, kids will be bringing home information about logging in to Seesaw.  They will access Seesaw through Clever.  Each student has a new sticker in his/her folder that shows his/her Clever username and password, as well as a note explaining how to get to Clever.  I also included Clever badges in the B DAY kids' folders.  (A DAY friends will get these next week.)  This is what all second graders use to log in at school, so it is more familiar to them.  I think that it will be good for the students to have two ways to log in, depending on their device and other technology issues.  We also introduced an online math platform this week:  i-ready.  It is an adaptive program that allows all students to learn at their own pace, and it can also be accessed through Clever.  Keep in touch with any questions or concerns!  jpowens@mcpsmt.org

This week, the kids worked hard on assessments that will help me see where everybody is, and where to go from here.  Having to stay inside all week because of the smoke was a bummer, but everyone maintained a positive attitude and we all had fun.  I think that we are all so happy to be together in person, even for only a couple of days per week!  On September 23rd, there will be a very helpful Seesaw training that will explain how to help your child access the home learning jobs on Seesaw beginning on September 29th.  I emailed the invitation to all parents.  Please remind your child to wear P.E. shoes for the next few weeks.

I feel like we got a lot accomplished this week in terms of getting into a groove with our schedule and routines.  That's not easy when the kids have five days between school days, but this group is rocking it!  We had time to do some STEM teambuilder activities, which were really fun, and let the kids showcase their creative, funny, smart selves!
