    Wow! December is flying by!  Here is a snapshot of this week in first grade:

    Reading: Finishing the book, "Going to School" – This is a nonfiction story about going to school in 9 different countries around the world.   We will be using text features to find information and comparing the differences and similarities between schools and students around the world.  We will also start the book, "The Winners' Choice"-This book is about a soccer team that won some money and they need to decide how to spend it.  While coming up with ideas, there is an earthquake and the kids decide to spend the money on fixing another school field so they can still have soccer tournaments. We will be working on story elements and sequencing. 

    Phonics– digraphs (sh, th, wh, ch) and the sounds of all (all and al) (see the pink sheet that went home today for practice at home).  

    Math – We are learning a new strategy, to make a ten to add with teen totals.  At home please practice the partners of 10.  Students should know these automatically, (1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5)

  • Week of 11/14 Happenings

    I hope you are enjoying the sunshine and the snow.  Thank you so much for meeting with me this past week to discuss your child's progress.  I enjoyed being able to see everyone in person.  Reminder to make sure your child is dressed for the weather and to be checking the snack schedule for your upcoming day.  Feel free to send your snack early if needed. Here is a look at this upcoming week and the two days before Thanksgiving break:

    Reading:  We are starting a new story called, "Far From Home", and focusing on story elements and about schools in other countries.

    Phonics: Inflectional endings -s and -ing, short vowel sounds, and initial blends.

    Math: True and False equations and +/- story problems.

    Writing: We will be comparing how schools in other countries are the same and different than our school. We will also be writing about things we are thankful for this season.

    Social Studies: We will be talking about gratitude.  We will also be learning about different schools around the world.

  • Week of 11/7 Happenings

    I am looking forward to seeing you in person this week for conferences! Students are dismissed at 11:00 on Thursday and no school Friday. 

     

    We are starting our annual canned food drive today. We (and UM Missoula) are competing with MSU in Bozeman until Nov. 17th for the title of most pounds collected!!

     

    Reading/Writing: We will finish the story "The Recess Queen" and write opinions.

     

    Phonics - We are focusing on the short “o” as in the word octopus or mop and “-s” plurals.  Please look for the blue practice sheet to guide your child’s reading and spelling practice at home.  The blue sheet will also include high-frequency words to practice.

     

    Math - This week’s focus is to learn to use subtraction to solve comparison word problems.  Key vocabulary includes the following words: more, fewer, and comparing.

     

    Social Studies- How to be a good classroom citizen and about gratitude.

  • Week of 10/31 Happenings

    Here is a quick view of what we will be learning about this week:

    Reading/Writing: We are starting a new story this week called "The Recess Queen."  We are working on story elements and writing opinions about the characters and how to be a good friend.

    Phonics - We are focusing on /i/ as in iguana and /x/ spelled -x like in the word mix.  See the blue sheet for high-frequency words and more information to practice. New words for this week are bolded. Please check out this website to help you teach your child irregular words that we call Heart Words. 

    Math - This week’s focus is on solving word problems using subtraction. 

    Science- learning what a scientist is and dissecting owl pellet's.

  • Week of 10/24 Happenings

    Here is a quick view of what we will be learning about this week:

    Reading/Writing: We are starting a new story this week called "Fine, Fine, School"  We are working on story elements and writing opinions about the characters.

    Phonics - We are focusing on /a/ as in alligator and /k/ spelled -ck like in the word duck.  See the blue sheet for high-frequency words and more information to practice. Please check out this website to help you teach your child irregular words that we call Heart Words. 

    Math - This week’s focus is the count on strategy to subtract.

    This week in phonics, we worked on all the consonants and the vowel sounds of u. We worked on reading and writing CVC words using the vowels a, e, i, o, and u. We also added these new sight words: they, will, not, lots, for, up.  In reading, we read a book called “What Would You Do with a Tail Like This?”  We worked on asking and answering questions using the book.  We also talked about the book’s main idea.  In writing, we practiced writing questions and answers using the text.   In science, we learned more about animal adaptations.  We also did an art project where we had to pick what animal feet we would want and make ourselves using those feet.  We also wrote why we would want those animal feet.  In math, we worked with partners of ten.  Finding missing add-ins within the sum of ten and being able to write addition and subtraction equations for three numbers in a number bond.

    This week in phonics, we worked on all the consonants and the vowel sounds of a, i, o, and e. We worked on writing CVC words using the vowels a, i, o, and e. We also added these new sight words: they, do, have, little, this, with.  In reading, we continued reading a non-fiction book called “Time to Sleep.”  We worked on asking and answering questions with the book.  We also talked about the book’s main idea.  In writing, we practiced writing a question and an answer using the book.   In science, we finished a fall poem and our lessons on respect.  In math, we worked on how to write a subtraction and an addition equation for a number bond.  We also worked on trying to find missing addends.   We also had a special puppet show from the fire department about fire safety.

  • Week of 9/26 Happenings

    This week we started our Daily 5 activities: work with words, work on writing, listen to reading, work on sight words, and read to self.  In phonics, we worked on all the consonants and the vowel sounds of a, i, and o. We worked on writing CVC words using the vowels a, i, and o. We also added these new sight words: was, of, go, had, has, and, his.  In reading, we finished up our first reading module and wrote about how Stellaluna and the birds showed friendship.  We then started our next reading module and read a non-fiction book called “Time to Sleep.”  We learned about what a table of content is, what headings are for, and what an index is.  In writing, we worked in our handwriting books and learned how to write an answer to a question in a complete sentence.   In science, we finished learning about bats and started learning about the season of fall.  In math, we worked on understanding number bonds and how to write two equations using those number bonds.

  • Week of 9/19 Happenings

    We had SO much fun at the Fun Run!  One student said it was the best day of their life!!  Thank you for all of your donations.  We had so many donations we won an extra recess with the principal next week!   

    This week in reading we read “Frog and Toad: Dragons and Giants.”  We focused on the characters, setting, and sequencing of the story.  In phonics, we worked on beginning letter sounds and short vowel i. We worked on sounding out three letter words and practiced our new sight words: big, it, is, in, if, look, you.  In math, we practiced adding within ten using doubles. In science, we learned about bats, made a bat book, and made a bat art project. We also had a garden lesson with the farmers and learned about plant parts.  Today we also met our 4th grade buddies!  They learned about each other and read some books together.  It was a busy week.
