Wow! December is flying by!  Here is a snapshot of this week in first grade:

Reading: Finishing the book, "Going to School" – This is a nonfiction story about going to school in 9 different countries around the world.   We will be using text features to find information and comparing the differences and similarities between schools and students around the world.  We will also start the book, "The Winners' Choice"-This book is about a soccer team that won some money and they need to decide how to spend it.  While coming up with ideas, there is an earthquake and the kids decide to spend the money on fixing another school field so they can still have soccer tournaments. We will be working on story elements and sequencing.

Phonics– digraphs (sh, th, wh, ch) and the sounds of all (all and al) (see the pink sheet that went home today for practice at home).

Math – We are learning a new strategy, to make a ten to add with teen totals.  At home please practice the partners of 10.  Students should know these automatically, (1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5)
