MOA High School Students and Families,

    Schedule Changes

Friday is the last day for any Missoula Online Academy (MOA) schedule changes. The deadline to submit a request for MOA schedule changes will be 1 PM.  MOA Schedule Changes

After 1 PM Friday, if you wish to drop your Montana Digital Academy (MTDA) course, you can still do so until September 22.  You will not be able to add new MTDA or MOA courses.  Please use this link after 1 PM Friday: MTDA Drop Requests Remember this is an external program from MOA and questions about their coursework should be directed to their staff.

    APEX

This week we got rolling in Apex in many of our courses. Here are some tips to help you be successful.

    • Make sure you check your Google Classroom to ensure that you know what your assignment is before you start your Apex.
    • Take notes and use any study guides provided in your course
    • Each quiz has two attempts.  Make sure you make the most of them.
    • There is a difference between completion and learning. It is important to ensure you are learning as you go rather than just finishing work.
    • Two low scores on a quiz will lock your progress until you ask for help
      • Email your instructor with your name, the course name and period and the number of the assignment.   Example:  John Smith in Biology Period 7 is locked out of 1.3.4
      • It may take your teacher a while to get back to you so work on a different course while you wait.

    Q Student Information System

MCPS utilizes the Q information system.  These grades will be a combination of classroom work from Apex and Google Classroom.  As a parent, you can view your students attendance, assignments, schedule and much more. To log in to Q or to request access to Q, visit this link: https://q.mcps.k12.mt.us/ParentPortal/  First grades will be posted next week.

    Graduation requirements
As student’s work their way through high school, we consistently discuss and refer to the MCPS graduation requirements. These requirements can be viewed here: https://www.mcpsmt.org/domain/2385

    How to earn semester credit
Students have the opportunity to earn credit for each of their classes at the end of each semester.  Credit is awarded as .5 credit for a semester long class. Credit for a year-long class is also awarded on a semester basis. If your student is currently taking six classes, and they pass all of them, they will end this semester with a total of three credits.  6 (classes) X .5 (credit) = 3 credits

    Success in class

Attendance Matters - In courses with live meetings students will be expected to join with their video on.   If a course has no live meetings then attendance will be counted based on student completion of the day's assignments.

Contacting teachers about specific classroom questions is the first place to start.

    High School Traffic Education
High School Traffic Education is run through the Lifelong Learning Center. For more information, check out their website and check frequently for updates: https://mcps.asapconnected.com/#CourseGroupID=16943

    Blackboard Messages
This message comes from Blackboard and is sent to you by the staff at MOA.  You are still part of your school so you may receive messages from Big Sky, Hellgate, Sentinel, Seeley Swan or Willard as well.   You may be returning to your school in January so it is a good idea to be aware of what is happening there as well.

Hello High School families of the Missoula Online Academy!

Each day brings us closer to meeting you/your students as we launch this amazing Online Academy. Our counselors worked to review what courses you requested at your home school and translated those into similar offerings at MOA. Since MOA is smaller than the average Missoula high school at approximately 500 students, we are not able to offer the robust course selections that you may be used to.  Every student received their graduation requirement core courses.  However, the electives we offer will be driven by the student’s original requests as well as staffing. In some cases students may retain a course at the home school during 0 hour.

Today we are releasing a list of course offerings that will be available at the Missoula Online Academy. Take a moment to review the current list of courses offered at the MOA:

     9th Grade.  10th Grade  11th Grade    12th Grade

If you would like to make a request for a course request change (for example drop English 3 and add an advanced English option) please complete this FORM.

If you are a new student to MCPS and have not requested courses yet, please use the same form, but add the 6 courses you would like to take including alternative courses.

There is no need to contact the school at this time.  The form is the current avenue to request changes.

If you had hoped for an elective that MOA is not teaching, we would encourage you to review the course selections at the Montana Digital Academy.  All core and required courses should be taken at the MOA. MTDA electives and foreign language selection can be found here:

MOA high school students may take up to 2 courses Fall semester at MTDA.  The deadline for guaranteed enrollment is noon, September 2.   Please complete this document to apply for an MTDA course:

Currently it is taking MOA staff at least two days to respond to parent inquiries sent via email and phone. Your message is important to us and we know that for you and your student, making a decision to join this brand new school and learn 100% online comes with many questions. Each of your questions and concerns are important to us and we commit to you that either I or a member of my staff will respond as soon as we are able.

Please standby for continued  information delivered to you via email soon. Please also remember to check the website often for updates.

    Dear MCPS Online Academy Parents,

I’m writing to you this morning to give you an update about our online academy that we now call MOA (Missoula Online Academy).

We have made a lot of progress in the past few weeks.  The administrative staff has been recruited and hired.  The curriculum development staff has been recruited and hired.  We have purchased course content for grades 6-12 and we have developed content for grades K-5.

Our current faculty of 40 has met and are in the process of developing professional learning communities to improve their skills in presenting and teaching in an online environment.  The District has contracted with a professional development company who specializes in online training to provide a number of courses that are available to all MCPS teachers, including our MOA faculty.

We have recruited counselors to work on a high school schedule to determine our sections and our specific course needs.

We are interviewing and reviewing prospective teaching candidates for the MOA on a daily basis and the number of teachers that will be a part of our online faculty will continue to grow.

On Tuesday, September 8th, students in grades 9-12 will begin instruction with their MCPS teachers and the Apex Learning courses.

On Tuesday September 8th, students in grades K-8 will participate in our Warm Up Week - a student learning and orientation week designed to create positive relationships and online learning skills that will be the foundation for success in the MOA. Every morning students will join their grade-level classmates and teachers for lessons in social-emotional-learning, school-wide expectations, personal organization, and time management skills that are appropriate for their age and grade. The rest of each day this week, students will complete independent learning activities designed to allow students to get used to our online school and provide teachers with feedback about their students.

Starting the week of September 15th, K-8 students will start to work in their own classroom groups with their individual teachers.

We have come a long way in a short period of time.  We are committed to providing the students in the MOA with a quality learning community.

MOA schedule for the first two weeks of school.
