Welcome to 2nd grade!
I'm your student's second grade teacher, Ms. DeJohn. This is my third year at Paxson and my third year in second grade. I LOVE second grade. We work on phonics and get to really think about how words are built and letters and sounds work together to build them, work on incredible writing projects, dive into literature, build critically important foundational math skills, and foster a lifelong love for social studies, science, and language exploration. Second grade is a time that truly can't be beat. We work so hard and all the while have so much fun.
In 2DJ, we strive towards a zero waste classroom. We learn about how and why to make positive changes in the environment throughout the year and take on many classroom initiatives to minimize our waste. This means rethinking our supplies, making sure we are being careful and respectful with our materials, and learning about other waste diversion strategies like composting and recycling.
I completed my undergraduate degree at Green Mountain College in Vermont. From there, I worked with a Farm to School AmeriCorps program and then moved out to Montana to do FoodCorps. While doing FoodCorps, I taught classes to second grade classes in public schools on the Flathead Reservation and realized I love being in the classroom. I went back to school at the University of Montana for my K-8 license and graduate degree in Elementary Education. While attending grad school, I worked in a variety of educational settings including outdoor education bringing kids on trips into the backcountry, shredding on mountain bikes, and learning to persevere through challenging or frustrating situations.
When I'm not at school I love spending time with my dog Huckleberry, riding bikes, and working on any one of my various and extensive hobbies that could range anywhere from sewing and felting to backpacking and everything in between.
