Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, Marissa is interested in helping kids practice the skills of lifelong leaders and fostering media literacy education especially surrounding understanding the news and building good research skills. Marissa strives to support students in all areas of learning, and to help them reach their highest potential through exploration, creativity, and hands on experiences. Marissa's teaching philosophy is based on the idea that students need to be active in constructing knowledge, not passive receivers. Children need generous amounts of time to explore literature and what reading means to them, paired developmentally appropriate instruction that guides them in navigating the media that surrounds. Marissa believes in real-world, authentic learning rooted in one’s own passions and natural intelligence.  She believes in the profound power of reading and talking about literature with each other, with books, and with the stories that tie us together.  She treasures time spent in the library with her students.
