Mr. Whiteman

Welcome to the CS Porter Choir Page.

This is my 8th year as Director of Choirs at CS Porter, and I think it will be our best yet.  Over the past few years, we have performed all over the Northwest and sent students to a variety of different festivals.  We participate in the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) All Northwest Divisional Honor Choirs, ACDA National Honor Choir, Music in the Parks Festival, Western Montana Youth Sing, and have toured with local choral group Dolce Canto.  Last year we performed the national anthem for the MT Conference of Education Leadership (MCEL) and the Harlem Globetrotters.  We will also earned a Gold Rating the the Seattle Heritage Festival.

This year, the Varsity Porterliers were selected to perform at the ACDA Northwest Conference.  We have a piece being composed especially for us that we will be premiering at the conference in March 2020.

Check out the calendar below for important dates throughout the year.  Go Cougars!

We are off to a great start here at Porter.  We have over 240 kids in choir right now and are working hard towards our first concerts.  Remember, all students need to wear blue jeans, black shoes, black socks and a t-shirt for the concert.  We will hand out polo shirts at the concert.

  • Varsity Porterliers will be open to all students with treble or unchanged voices, with around 8-10 spots in each voice type available. Portamentos Men's Choir will be open to all male students, regardless of their voice type or classification. Signups for auditions will begin when school starts. Dates and what to prepare are below.

    NEW FOR THIS YEAR:
If you want to be in the Varsity Porterliers or Portamentos, you must also commit to every performance. Because of the level of our performances this year, we can not afford to perform without every person. Speak to Mr. Whiteman if you have questions or concerns.

August 28th - First Day of School
September 6th - Last Day to Change Music Classes
September 9-12 - Auditions for Portamentos & Varsity Porterliers
    September 13th - Results Posted
    September 17 & 18 - Portamentos' Mens Choir Rehearsals
    September 19 & 20 - Varsity Porterliers Rehearsals

If you are a 7th or 8th grader hoping to switch your music class from band or orchestra TO choir, please prepare an audition.
(6th graders do not need to audition to switch music classes. Please see your counselor for a form to fill out.)

What to prepare for an audition:

    Sing a Solo
Can be with or without background music that best demonstrates your voice.
Try to stay away from pop tunes.
I want to hear YOUR voice, not your attempt to sound like someone else.
There is a YouTube playlist of great solos on the website.

Sing a Major Scale using Do to Do and proper hand signs
Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do

    Rhythm Reading
You will be asked to count and clap a rhythm.

    Pitch Matching
I will play several notes on the piano, and have you sing them back to me to check pitch matching skills

    Voice Typing
I will have you sing up 5 pitches and down 5 pitches on "ah" multiple times to find your range and voice type.
