As MCPS middle school librarians, we are committed to maintaining collections that support student learning, reflect diverse perspectives, and are appropriate for the students we serve. We also work to foster a strong culture of literacy within our schools and the broader community.

The middle school years are a critical time for students to develop their identities as readers. Providing access to a wide variety of books allows students to explore new ideas, discover personal interests, and build confidence in their reading. As library professionals, it is our responsibility to follow MCPS Board Policies when selecting materials, ensuring our collections reflect and support the diverse interests and needs of all students.

Supporting Your Reader

One of the most powerful ways to support your child’s reading is by talking with them about what they read. When caregivers show curiosity about the books that come home, it reinforces that reading matters and that their ideas about books are worth sharing.

Here are a few ways to start meaningful conversations about the books your child is reading and help them build a lifelong love of reading and learning.

Be curious about their book choices. Middle school readers are discovering their interests. Have your first question be “What made you choose this book?” or “What do you like about this genre or author?” When kids feel their choices are respected, they are more likely to keep reading.
Ask open-ended questions about the books they bring home. Ask questions like “What surprised you in the story?” or “Which character would you want as your friend?” to get your child thinking more deeply about what they are reading.
Connect books to real life. Stories often reflect real experiences, emotions, and challenges. Try asking them if the book reminds them of something in their own life, if they’ve ever felt like the main character, or what they might do in situations that come up in the book. These conversations help students build empathy and personal connections to what they read.
Let your child be the expert. Invite your child to share what they’re reading or learning about.
They might summarize the book, describe a favorite scene, or tell you whether they’d recommend it. Talking about their ideas builds confidence and deepens their understanding.

Note on Classroom Book Collections

Many teachers keep classroom book collections for optional independent reading. If teachers assign books from these collections, they are responsible for maintaining an up-to-date inventory that can be shared with parents or administrators upon request.

How can I see what the library has to offer?

All MCPS library catalogs are available 24/7 on our library websites. You can access each school’s catalog through its individual school website.

This book seems too mature. Why is my child checking it out?

With middle school students ranging in ages from 11 to 15, we emphasize to every student that not every book will be for them. If a book does not match your family's values, we encourage you to talk with your student(s) about which books are a better fit and have open conversations with both your student and the school librarian.

What should I do if I don’t like the book my child is reading?

Family values are important, and conversation is key. Talk to your child about what you believe in as a family and make sure they understand how to choose books that align with your family values.

Who do I contact if my child has a book I don’t like?

Your first point of contact should be with the person responsible for the material (i.e., teacher or librarian) and the building principal. If a resolution has not been reached to your satisfaction, see Board Policy 2313P for next steps.
