Gifted Education

"I am a teacher to a gifted student.  How do I best support them?"

Identify their strengths and interests as a learner and use this information to suppor their learning like you do all students.  Once students show you a level 4 mastery of a standard, utillize resources and curriculum to offer extension opportunitites that keep learners engaged.

"I suspect my child is a gifted learner.  What do I do?"

First, check-in and open up communication between yourself and your student's classroom teacher.  They are the best starting point to identify student strengths, behaviors, and growth areas.  If after collaborating with the classroom teacher, you would like to request an evaluation, you should reach out to your student's building principal and make this request.

NOTE:  In MCPS, every student takes the CogAT in 2nd grade as a metric to initially assess high-ability giftedness in learners.  This is often when gifted learners are identified.
