MEETING 21st CENTURY NEEDS WITH OUR FACILITIES
Craig Henkel, Principal
Welcome to Smart Schools 2020, a system wide initiative to create school facilities that provide students with the security, technology and dynamic learning environment they need to achieve in school and in life. As your principal, I'm pleased to say that Washington Middle School is part of that initiative and is planning significant and much-needed changes over the next few years.
Built in the 1951, Washington Middle School was originally designed as a first through eighth grade building. It later became the home to approximately 600 middle school students. Overcrowded conditions today and increased enrollment projections create a critical need for additional learning space. The main entrance structure does not support the needs and safety of our students, staff, parents and visitors. Our current facility does not adequately support 21st-century technology. These problems are impacting student achievement, learning environments and safety.
Our proposed option to consolidate Washington will allow staff to better meet the needs of all students as we move into the future. The plan focuses on improving safety within the building, creating an infrastructure that supports increased technology usage, implementing 21st century learning environments, and accommodating future enrollment.
In order to address these key issues, Washington Middle School has conducted a thoughtful scoping process and is proposing an option that will reconfigure and add additional spaces to improve learning environments.
We invite you to learn more about the plan, and get involved in shaping the future of education for our children. Please feel free to email firstname.lastname@example.org or call me with questions.
