Today the students in the Blue Pod celebrated leveling up in their 4B skills, (be respectful, be kind, be safe, be a leader!). They have been working hard to embody and demonstrate what the 4Bs are this school year, and because of it, they have met their first goal of earning enough 'gumballs'! We were able to celebrate all their hard work today! Go Blue Pod Leaders!Operation level up visual. The visual is of a gumball machine that has different levels

  • Operation Level Up!

Posted by Maria Ahnen on 12/4/2020 5:15:00 PM

At Lowell, we plan instruction using a 6-8 week "impact cycle." During an impact cycle, we focus instruction by identifying the grade level learning intentions and success criteria students need to master. We focus our interventions on the impact cycle and we use frequent assessment to gauge student progress.

For the upcoming impact cycle, every classroom will be working on improving foundational reading skills. During these first weeks of December, we will begin engaging students in goal setting to look at their current reading level and we will help them set individual goals to "level up" to the next reading level. These goals will be sent home to parents.

In the classroom, we will focus our reading instruction on building foundational reading skills in phonics and phonemic awareness as well as increasing the time students spend reading independent level texts.

How can you help as a parent? During the first weeks of December, our teachers will be sending home your child's reading level and the "Power Skills/Words" your child needs to work on to help them move up to the next reading level. Using this Parent's Guide to Supporting Reading At Home, you can identify ways you can also support your child's reading growth. This guide uses the IRLA leveling system that we use at school. At each level, there are specific skills and words students work on to move to the next level.

Help your student "level up" at school by practicing at home! If you are interested in obtaining additional materials to assist your child in reading, as always, reach out to me at mahnen@mcpsmt.org!
