    • Matz Absence – I will be gone the week of May 10th – 14th. If you have any immediate needs such as arrivals or dismissals, please contact the office directly for the week that I am gone.  Thank you.  I appreciate your help in this matter.  If you have any other questions or concerns, you can email me and I will get back to you as soon as possible.  I will be back at school on Monday, May 17th, which is a remote day.  I will be available for office hours on the 17th between 9-10.

    Curriculum for the Week of May 10th ….

    • Reading – We will be reading the text, Below Deck: A Titanic Story by Tony Bradman.
    • Writing – We will begin to look at figurative language. Students will be introduced to similes and metaphors.
    • Math – We will be looking at comparing fractions.   Please be sure that your child continues to practice his/her multiplication & division facts at home.
    • Spelling – There will be a spelling test on Friday, May 14th. The words for this week are Prefixes. The list will be sent home on Monday, May 10th.  The words are as follows…prepaid, midnight, overflow, outdoors, outline, overgrown, prefix, Midwest, pretest, midpoint, outgoing, overtime, overdue, outside, & outfield. The Challenge Words are as follows…precaution, predicition, midsection, overweight, & prehistoric.

    • Writing – We will continue to discuss opinion writing. We will be writing a book review.
    • Math – We will continue looking at fractions.   Please be sure that your child continues to practice his/her multiplication & division facts at home.
    • Spelling – There will be a spelling test on Friday, May 7th. The words for this week are Vowels with r. I will send the list home on Monday, May 3rd.  The words are as follows…third, early, world, certain, dirty, herself, earth, word, perfect, verb, nerve, worm, thirsty, workout, & earn.     • Reading – We will be reading the text, Back of the Bus by Aaron Reynolds, as well as the article, Rosa Parks: Hero of Our Time by Garnet Nelson Jackson. If time, we will begin to read the text, Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers’ Strike of 1909 by Michelle Markel.
    • Writing – We will be introducing opinion writing by doing some activities on fact verses opinion.
    • Math – We will finish looking at the concept of graphing. We will then be introducing fractions.   Please be sure that your child continues to practice his/her multiplication & division facts at home.
    • Rewards Program – We will continue with the Rewards Program during our intervention time. This program will focus on many aspects of spelling such as blending word parts into words, vowel combinations, vowel conversions, reading parts of real words, identifying suffixes & prefixes, as well as vocabulary and spelling dictation.  This program will all be done in the classroom.  We will be doing Lesson 15 this week. This will be the last lesson for the Rewards Program.
    • Spelling – There will be a spelling test on Friday, April 16th. The words for this week have suffixes…-ly, -ful, -ness, & -less. I will send the list home on Monday, April 12th.  The words are as follows…beautiful, safely, kindness, finally, spotless, worthless, illness, helpful, daily, suddenly, wireless, quietly, fairness, cheerful, & painful.     • Reading – We will be researching and reading about different types of storms. We will also be doing a short readers’ theater play entitled, The Weather Play.
    • Writing – We will continue our unit on weather. We will be reading about different types of storms.  Students will have the opportunity to focus on one type of storm and do some research. They will then create a weather tri-fold on their specific storm.
    • Math – We will finish looking at the concept of area this week. We will then introduce graphing.  Please be sure that your child continues to practice his/her multiplication & division facts at home.
    • Rewards Program – We will continue with the Rewards Program during our intervention time. This program will focus on many aspects of spelling such as blending word parts into words, vowel combinations, vowel conversions, reading parts of real words, identifying suffixes & prefixes, as well as vocabulary and spelling dictation.  This program will all be done in the classroom.  We will be doing Lesson 14 this week.
    • Spelling – There will be a spelling test on Friday, April 9th. The words for this week have spellings with j, s, and k. I will send the list home on Monday, April 5th.  The words are as follows…clock, large, page, mark, kitten, judge, crack, edge, pocket, brake, change, ridge, jacket, badge, & orange. The Challenge Words are as follows…freckles, advantage, pledge, Kentucky, & kingdom.

    • Writing – We will continue with our poetry unit. We will be creating different types of poems such as acrostic, cinquain, couplets, and diamantes.  Students will then have the opportunity to type and illustrate their poems.
    • Math – We will continue to look at the concept of area this week. We will be multiplying to find area, as well as solve word problems involving area. Please be sure that your child continues to practice his/her multiplication & division facts at home.
    • Rewards Program – We will continue with the Rewards Program during our intervention time. This program will focus on many aspects of spelling such as blending word parts into words, vowel combinations, vowel conversions, reading parts of real words, identifying suffixes & prefixes, as well as vocabulary and spelling dictation.  This program will all be done in the classroom.  We will be doing Lesson 13 this week.

    • Spring Parent – Teacher Conferences – The Sign – Up Genius link was sent out on Thursday, February 25th. This link will allow you to sign up for parent-teacher conferences.  I will be holding conferences March 4th & March 5th, as well as March 8th – March 11th.  All conferences will be done via Google Meet or by phone.  If you prefer by phone only, please indicate that when signing up for a time slot. Conferences will be 15 minutes in length, however, the time slots are scheduled for 20 minutes to allow me to move between conferences. Once the conference schedule is confirmed and complete, I will then send Google Meet links via email for the specific day/time of each individual conference. If you need help signing up for a conference day/time or have a question regarding the schedule, please contact me. Thanks!

    • Reading – We will continue our unit on weather. We will be reading the text, Living Through a Natural Disaster by Eve Recht.
    • Writing – We will continue with our poetry unit. We will be creating different types of poems such as acrostic, cinquain, couplets, and diamantes.
    • Math – We will be refining ideas about patterns, then reviewing multiplication, division, & patterns prior to taking the Unit 2 Assessment on Thursday, March 11th. Please be sure that your child is practicing his/her multiplication & division facts at home.
    • Rewards Program – We will continue with the Rewards Program during our intervention time. This program will focus on many aspects of spelling such as blending word parts into words, vowel combinations, vowel conversions, reading parts of real words, identifying suffixes & prefixes, as well as vocabulary and spelling dictation.  This program will all be done in the classroom.  We will be doing Lesson 12 this week.
    • Spelling – There will be no spelling test this week due to the shortened week. Spelling words will be sent home on Thursday, March 11th for the week after Spring Break.

    • Reading – We will continue our unit on weather. We will be reading the text, On the Same Day in March by Marilyn Singer.  We will also be doing the Mystery Science Lesson 3 entitled…Climate, Geography, & Global Weather Patterns.
    • Writing – We will continue with our poetry unit. We will be creating different types of poems such as acrostic, cinquain, couplets, and diamantes.
    • Math – We will be working with our multiplication & division facts, introducing a multiplication table, as well as explore patterns. Please be sure that your child is practicing his/her multiplication & division facts at home.
    • Rewards Program – We will continue with the Rewards Program during our intervention time. This program will focus on many aspects of spelling such as blending word parts into words, vowel combinations, vowel conversions, reading parts of real words, identifying suffixes & prefixes, as well as vocabulary and spelling dictation.  This program will all be done in the classroom.  We will be doing Lesson 12 this week.
    • Spelling – We will continue with spelling the week of March 1st. We will introduce the words on the first day of the week, do a two – sided worksheet in class.  If the worksheet is not completed, then it will be sent home the first day and be expected to be returned the following day. I am asking that students use the Spelling Menu that was sent home, to practice their words daily.  Students will be tested on this list of spelling words on Friday, March 5th.  Now that we are in Phase 2, I will be testing students on spelling words each Friday.  While we are still only in school T-F, I will send the spelling lists home on Friday. The words are as follows…father, chapter, other, alphabet, watch, English, weather, catch, fashion, shrink, pitcher, flash, athlete, trophy, & nephew.  The Challenge Words are…northern, establish, emphasis, hyphen, & challenge.  Challenge words are optional.  These are the words that students will be tested on for Friday, March 5th.
