• Happy Last Week!

    Happy last week of school!

Crazy how we have made it there already. This year has been the longest and also the shortest year.

Specials are rotating one per pod this week, so we have a chance to say bye to everyone.

Tomorrow is our 5th grade celebration, and I'm excited to announce that my band will be playing the event! It's going to be so cool to have the kids actually see me play music instead of just talking about it.

This is my last post of the year, I hope you all have a lovely summer.

    Kindly,
    Dillon Johns

  • Red Pod in the Music Room!

Posted by Dillon Johns on 5/25/2021 12:00:00 PM

    Hello everyone!

Just wanted to give a quick update before the end of the year!

Red Pod has been in the music room for one week now, this week being our second. We are working through rhythms using one of my favorite instruments, the bucket drums!

Thanks to the selfless people at home depot, Lowell has about 40 five gallon buckets, and a large collection of drum sticks. We use this to learn about basic rhythms, back beats, and how drums are used in pop music.

I like to take requests for school friendly songs we can learn to play together, and this week's songs are Bang! by AJR, and We Will Rock You by Queen.

    Having a blast!
Stay tuned for a pretty cool announcement about the last week of school, as well :)

    Thanks,

    Mr Johns

  • Wait... we still have a music room?

Posted by Dillon Johns on 3/31/2021 4:00:00 PM

    Hello everyone!

I'm super excited to announce that next week when I move to the blue pod, we are going to try out having music back in the music room!

This means we will have some time to talk about instruments, and play some xylophones. I plan on sanatizing inbetween each class so everything is safe, but it's so exciting to pick up on some curriculm that we missed from earlier in the year.

Second grade will start in my room next week, third through fifth will have a week in their classroom to discuss band and orchestra and talk through the different instruments involved in each.

    Big things coming!

  • What's going on?

Posted by Dillon Johns on 3/25/2021 4:00:00 PM

    Hey everyone!

I just wanted to give a little update on what's going on in the music room for the next little bit. We are walking a lot about the instruments in the symphony. Getting kids ready for the transition to learning to play instruments in band and orchestra, or just getting them used to the different names and sounds of the instruments.

I have showed a quick group of powerpoints showing which instruments are in which families, and talking about what they sound like.

I'm very excited for the future of these kids, and they're going to be great musicians!

    Thanks for reading,
    Dillon Johns

  • Having a blast in the blue pod!

Posted by Dillon Johns on 2/3/2021 4:00:00 PM

    Hello everyone!

Mr Johns here with a short update. I'm currently in the blue pod, and will be transitioning to green on the 16th!

In the blue pod we are working on some cool musical concepts. 5th grade is working on reading music on a staff using the treble clef. 3rd and 4th grades are working on some new rhythms and the basics of rhythm reading using counting. 2nd grade is starting to refresh our minds on some solfege, and learning songs we already know but using solfege.

I hope everyone is staying safe. Thanks for reading!

    Hey everyone!

I hope you're doing well! I'm officially back after a little covid close contact scare. I tested negative, and everything is all good, if you were wondering. :)

Conferences are coming up so I thought I would make a little blog post where you can find the link to my slide deck. I have a little video about what we did this past trimester, as well as a link so sign up for online conferences.

    Have a good weekend, everyone!

  • Red Pod Madness

Posted by Dillon Johns on 10/21/2020 4:00:00 PM

    Hello everyone!

Mr Johns here, just to give everyone a little update on the red pod so far!

We have been and will continue to work on multiple things at once. We are starting to learn how to read music. We have been working on rhythms since the first grade, and now 3-5 is starting to learn about the musical staff. Today we started learning the note names on a staff with a treble clef. EGBDF. We learned this through acronyms, my personal favorite being "Empty Garbage Before Dad Freaks". Over the next week we will learn to write notes on the staff, and hear what they sound like.

Second grade is working on reading our rhythms, and next week we will work on ostinatos, which are short repeating patterns.

I have been having so much fun with the Red Pod kiddos, it's going to be so weird to come back to blue next!

    Thanks for reading,
    Dillon Johns

  • Last week in Green Pod

Posted by Dillon Johns on 10/6/2020 4:00:00 PM

    Hello everyone!

This is my last week in the green pod for a little while! I'd love to update you a little bit on what we have been and will continue doing.

In kindergarten, we have been working on steady beat quite a bit. Both with body percussion, and with rhythm sticks. The kids are coming a long way! We have also been talking through the differences between high and low, and how to adapt our voices to talk high or talk low.

In first grade, we started talking about our first rhythms! Your first grader now knows how to read quarter notes (ta) and eighth notes (titi). We have also talked a little about quarter note rests. After we got our notes down, we spent some time writing ostinatos, which are short repeating patterns. At first we read some of mine, and then we have kids write their own!

Next week specialists will be rotating. I'll be in the red pod. I'm so excited to see all the faces that I haven't seen since March!

    Thanks,
    Dillon Johns

  • First week in green pod!

Posted by Dillon Johns on 9/24/2020 12:00:00 PM

    Hello everyone!

This week ws our first rotation into new pods! I've been having so much fun working with the littles. So far, we have worked on a couple things.

Kindergarten has worked on syllables in our names, using a drum so count. We have also worked on keeping a steady beat using body percussion. This has been done for three songs, one mid tempo, one fast, and one tht starts slow but speeds itself up.

First grade has been solidifying our knowledge in steady beats, and discovering ways to create interesting sounds using drum sticks. Some good ideas we have had so far are: Drummin on the table, using the metal part of the table for more interesting sounds, and clicking our sticks together.

I've only been working with them for two days, but I already know they will be great musicians!

I'm looking forward to the next few weeks that I'll be in their rooms!

    Thanks,

    Dillon Johns
