• First week in green pod!

Posted by Dillon Johns on 9/24/2020 12:00:00 PM

    Hello everyone!

This week ws our first rotation into new pods! I've been having so much fun working with the littles. So far, we have worked on a couple things.

Kindergarten has worked on syllables in our names, using a drum so count. We have also worked on keeping a steady beat using body percussion. This has been done for three songs, one mid tempo, one fast, and one tht starts slow but speeds itself up.

First grade has been solidifying our knowledge in steady beats, and discovering ways to create interesting sounds using drum sticks. Some good ideas we have had so far are: Drummin on the table, using the metal part of the table for more interesting sounds, and clicking our sticks together.

I've only been working with them for two days, but I already know they will be great musicians!

I'm looking forward to the next few weeks that I'll be in their rooms!

  • Welcome Back!

Posted by Dillon Johns on 9/9/2020 4:00:00 PM

    Hellow everyone!

Mr. Johns here. Just wanted to update everyone a little bit on my schedule and some changes within the school regarding music.

Because of the Hybrid model of school we're currently in, specialists are in cohorts. From the beginning of school until now, I have been spending my time in the blue pod. Teaching music lessons, and also helping out with ELA and Math stuff.

On September 21st, specialists will rotate, and I'll be moving myself to the green pod. I'm so excited to meet our new kindergarteners and to see our first graders again!

As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to shoot me an email. I have had a tiny bit of trouble with some parent emails going to my spam folder for some reason. But I'll be checking that folder as well, as to not miss any messages.

    Thanks so much!

  • Remote Learning

Posted by Dillon Johns on 3/27/2020 12:00:00 PM

    Hello everyone!

I hopw you're well and healthy. I'm creating this blog post to update what remote learning for music class is going to look like.

As of now, I have an "Online Resources" section on my website. This includes links to my YouTube videos which will include activities. Below my YouTube videos, I have a list of fun music related video playlists. This includes some stuff we have watched in class, as well as just some fun to watch videos.

All activities I have on my site will also be on classroom teacher's weekly splash pages. I decided to put this on my site, as well, in order to have a back up if anyone wants to repeat activities, or if they lose the link to begin with.

The other specialists and I are talking about doing office hours. The official time will be sent out very soon. This will be a time that I will dedicate to being at my computer ready to answer all emails and even some video chats if you want to say hi.

If your child films a video of a music activity please share with me or their classroom teacher. We are planning on doing virtual community circles, and would love to feature their videos!

Please if you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me at djohns@mcpsmt.org. I usually answer my emails pretty quickly.

    Thanks very much,
    Mr. Johns

  • Quick update

Posted by Dillon Johns on 3/6/2020 8:00:00 AM

I hope everyone is well. I attended both 5th grade band and orchestra concerts and they sounded amazing! Lots of progress since last time for sure, I can't wait to see the next one. I just thought I'd give a quick update on music class lately!

4th and 5th grade have been doing bucket drums, and seem to be liking it. We've been working on playing grooves along side some pop songs. Dance Monkey seems to be a favorite.

4th, 5th, and 3rd have all been working on rhythms using different systems than the typical Ta, Titi, and TaKaDiMi. In middle school, these syllables aren't used anymore, so we are working on counting with numbers like they will for the rest of their musical career!

2nd grade just learned a few new notes, and we can now sing Do, Re, Me, So, and La. It's always exciting when a group of kids can sing a full pentatonic scale.

1st grade has been doing a lot of movement and singing game to get comfortable multitasking. We also recently introduced the term "Ostinato" which is a short repeating pattern.

Kinder has been working on many things, but mostly our unit with coins. Learning the difference between pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

Looking forward to parent teacher conferences next week, and also, of course, spring break. Below is my link to Signup Genius, if you're interested, i still have a few spots open on both days.

  • Welcome back!

    Welcome back everyone!

Thank you for all your support with the holiday Program. It went really well, and the kids seemed to love it! Our  superintendent attended one of the performances and also mentioned how great they were.

Now that school is back, we are beginning some new things. Home depot has selflessly donated some new empty five gallon buckets. I am working on creating sticks and readying the buckets. Our 4th and 5th graders are going to be beginning a brand new unit in bucket drumming. It will be structured similiar to a drumline and I think it's going to go well!

Third grade is diving into the study of 16th notes and more complicated rounds and onstinatos.

Second grade and first grade are going to be continuing our work on the xylophones.

Kindergarten will finally begin with some instruments. They have been looking forward to this all year, and I'm so excited to make it happen!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email or call me.

Halloween games were fun and everything but now starts the real game. Today marks the first rehearsal of music for our Holiday program later in December. The performances will be on December 19th. There will be three concerts, each lasting around 30 minutes. K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 are each performing their own little show for you all.

Feel free to come by, concerts start at 12:30pm and will take place in the Lowell gym.

Wish us luck as we embark on some fun tunes!
